WelcomeThe Northeast Tennessee Master Gardeners are a group of volunteers who help the county Extension Services in the Northeast Tennessee counties of Washington, Sullivan, Hawkins, Greene, Unicoi, and Carter by providing education for the communities in home gardening and related areas. The volunteers also extend horticulture projects throughout the region. The Master Gardener volunteer program allows individuals to dedicate their time and talents to enhancing the quality of life for citizens in the region using the science and art of horticulture.
How to become a Northeast Tennessee Master GardenerThe University of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service provides training for future Master Gardeners. Classes (14) begin in the fall of the year and meet for ten weeks with the classes alternating from day to evening in succesive years. The location of the classes change, but tend to be in the middle of the region. A horticultural notebook is provided as part of the class fee charged to attendees. Professors and other professionals share their knowledge and experience. Certificates of attendance are issued to those who complete the required number of classes. To obtain your Master Gardener Certificate, you must complete 40 volunteer hours in addition to attending the classes and must complete 8 continuing education units per year. Chris Ramsey, the Sullivan County extension agent, is the program advisor. Contact him at 279-2723 for additional information or to sign up for the program.
